Help for Drivers: Apps to Open and Start Your Car
One of
the commercials that describe the development of the new Dodge Dart - the
longer version at least - includes the line "Give it a smartphone app that
can start the engine." Little else is known about the app yet and it is
not yet available for download either. However, with the app, Dodge joins
Chevrolet in offering their drivers a very useful tool, assuming it will unlock
the car as well.

It will
be interesting to see what technology will be used by Dodge to make the
connection between the phone and the new Dart. The myChevrolet app, of course,
is a byproduct of OnStar and makes use of a vehicles remote start feature, if
it has one.

And as an
OnStar service, the myChevrolet app will only work with a monthly fee. One
might argue that a minimum service, such as lockout protection and emergency
start-up, should be offered free, but that will not be argued here. Time will
tell if Dodge will be connecting its app to a fee-based service.

The
myChevrolet app also includes a Warning Lights visual reference guide, a
searchable Owner Manual, and a Find My Car feature that lets a driver mark
parking spots on a map to help find your car later, features that hopefully
will find their way into the Dart app.

you need if the key fob battery has run down, which is a too common occurrence
in today's keyless start vehicles. If the dealer is still open. Roadside
assistance will help too. If the car is still under warranty.

And yet
another call will get the answer a driver needs when a new warning light shows
up on the instrument panel. After all, each and every additional safety feature
comes with its very own warning light, or set of lights, and an acronym

Most
people are drivers and not car buffs and need the kind of help the Chevrolet
and Dodge apps provide. They might misplace their keys or miss the signal that
the key fob battery is getting weak. But almost no one loses track of their
cell phones. Fee or no fee, each and every driver should take advantage of the
apps and services.
